The art of baking entails a lot of precision, and certain rules have to be followed to ensure a successful baking experience. From cleanliness, strict procedures and cooking conditions, defined processes should be followed to the letter, or else you will end up with disastrous results.
Here are some explanations behind the most common baking failures. A great percentage of them are due to oven temperature, which is the most important factor that affects every baking end result. Whenever the oven is too hot, this results to the outsides of the cake or bread getting burnt before the center portion is even cooked. Especially with making bread, too much heat kills off the yeast before the loaf can rise which results to a dense and heavy texture instead of fluffy or airy bread. Temperatures beyond the prescribed level will also cause cakes to dome at the center instead of the whole mixture rising uniformly.
The opposite occurs when oven temperature is low. Bread fails to rise and will remain soggy while cakes will most likely be rubbery in texture and sag at the center. Temperature alone though is not the only reason why cakes and breads fail to end up in their desired textures and shapes. Sometimes, cakes with a domed top can be caused by a lack of mixing ingredients thoroughly, or probably the batter could have been too dry. Sometimes, this can also be the result of too much baking powder.
Cakes that sag at the center can also be the result of too much opening and closing the oven while checking if your cake is done. If the middle portion is soggy or a bit doughy, this can be an indication that too much liquid was used.
For doughy or heavy breads, your mixture probably lacked yeast, or the water you may have used was not warm enough to cause yeast activation. Too hot water can also kill off the yeast and not cause the dough to rise, so using the recommended temperature is extremely important when baking bread. Even the temperature within the kitchen is crucial for dough to rise. Sometimes, when there is too much humidity, the dough does not rise accordingly.
As you can see, there are several factors that can affect the success of every baking endeavor. Be diligent and don’t bargain on the instructions so you can avoid these heartbreaking baking disasters.
